One of WWE's greatest legends 'set for incredible Royal Rumble match return'

One of WWE's greatest legends 'set for incredible Royal Rumble match return'

The WWE legend could star in the Royal Rumble after keeping fans waiting for months to see him compete

Every time the buzzer sounds in WWE's famous Royal Rumble match, fans wait with bated breath hoping that an iconic superstar will hit the ring.

The endless possibilities of huge debuts and major returns make the annual WWE event even more hotly anticipated than WrestleMania for some viewers.

No one can forget the shock entries of John Cena in 2008 and Edge in 2010, Mick Foley's 2004 showing or AJ Styles' sensational arrival in 2016.

A 30-man contest and for the first time a 30-woman Royal Rumble match will take place tomorrow night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Brock Lesnar will defend the Universal title versus Braun Strowman and Kane in a triple threat match, while AJ Styles will face Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in a 2-on-1 handicap match with the WWE title on the line.

But rumours that a future WWE Hall of Famer may be returning to action at the event could top the excitement generated by either of those championship bouts.

According to Dave Meltzer on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Live, The Undertaker could make a surprise appearance in the men’s Royal Rumble match.

The veteran reporter said he couldn't confirm whether it was the direction WWE is heading in, as he thought it was odd the company had not advertised the Phenom for the event.

However, his colleague Bryan Alvarez countered this claim, as he suggested that the selling point for WWE these days is the magnitude of the event, not the talent set to appear.

The Undertaker has not competed since the main event of WrestleMania 33, when he lost to Roman Reigns and appeared to retire following the defeat in Orlando, Florida.

He left his hat, gloves and iconic black cloak in the centre of the ring, leading many to speculate that the 52-year-old superstar was calling time on his illustrious career.

But the seven-time world champion returned to our TV screens for the 25th anniversary of Monday Night Raw at the Manhattan Center in New York City earlier this week.

Looking in incredible shape despite reportedly undergoing hip surgery last spring, the Deadman finally broke his silence by delivering a cryptic, rambling promo on Raw .

He said: "The carnage began on this sacred ground of evil 25 years ago. I’ve taken legends and ripped them off their pedestals and thrown them in the cold, dark earth.

"Stone Cold answered to the reaper; Mick Foley answered to the reaper; even my own flesh and blood, Kane, had to answer to the reaper. They all tried, they all failed.

"And now on this sacred ground I declare for all of those who have fallen, it is truly time you rest in peace.”

On commentary, Jim Ross wondered aloud if the speech was a “warning”, while Jerry 'the King' Lawler admitted he was just as clueless as the rest of us.

Taker's non-committal speech opens up the possibility of a remarkable return at this year's Mania in New Orleans, where John Cena has been rumoured to be his opponent.

Many fans thought a feud between Big Evil and the 16-time world champion would kick off at RAW 25, but Cena instead engaged with Elias, who smashed a guitar over his head.

A rivalry between the face of WWE for the last 15 years and the sinister songsmith seems to be a substitute for John facing Samoa Joe, who has suffered a serious foot injury.

Perhaps the hotly-anticipated showdown between two of the biggest icons of the industry will be teased tomorrow in Pennsylvania.

Watch WWE Royal Rumble 2018 live on the WWE Network or on Sky Sports Box Office at midnight on Sunday, January 28.
