Six Dressing Mistakes To Avoid At All Cost When Attending A Job Interview

Certain dressing mistakes can stop you from getting a job despite the fact that your qualifications make you the perfect candidate. Wearing the wrong interview clothes could seriously damage your credibility and cost you your dream job.

Your Appearance Isn’t Suitable For The Company
A suit is most ideal for any corporate environment but wearing a blazer or tie at a startup could make you look stuffy. The whole point of an interview is to check if you’re the right fit for each other. You should be sure that the visual message you are sending aligns as much as possible with the organisation in question.

You can ask your recruiter for recommendations on what interview clothes to wear, or checking out the company’s social media page to get a sense of how employees dress. If you can’t get any of these information, it is better for you to be dressed up than way underdressed.

You Wear Loud Prints
While small floral prints are probably toned down enough to work in a job interview, big, bold flowers tend to look too casual. Unless you’re applying for a fashion company, an animal print could look out of place.

Instead, swap it out for a solid colour or more subtle print. No interviewer will see your outfit as inappropriate if you wear neutral colours. If you’re unsure, it’s better to play it safe.

You Put No Thought Into Your Bag
Just like the rest of your dressing, the bag you carry should fit with the company interviewing you. A briefcase is perfect for a corporate position but might look too formal for a startup.

You wear an outfit you bought 10 years ago
Interview clothes that look old or an inappropriate fit are a bad choice when you’re job seeking. If your dressing seems too tight, too long, or bunchy or bulging, it’s probably a sign it’s time to change it up.

Ensure that your outfit lines up with the trends. Wearing wide trousers and a boxy blazer will make you look out of touch. You can get your outfit tailored, buy new clothes or borrow from a friend. You will probably be more confident in new clothes that feels fresh and well fitted.

Your Outfit Is Too Colourful
While you don’t need to stick to black and white, it is best you add some colour. A good rule is one element of the outfit is brighter while the rest is more neutral. Feel free to wear a colourful shirt or blouse, but pair it with a gray suit.

You’re Showing Too Much Skin
While there is no need for you to cover yourself from head to toe, ensure that your outfit isn’t too revealing. It’s all about what you’re comfortable with.

Balance a V-neck top with a longer skirt, or cover a sleeveless shift dress with a coordinating blazer or cardigan. If you’re still not sure if your outfit is appropriate, ask a friend to give their honest opinion.
