Following weeks after its unveiling and without it being operational, the Nigerian government has suspended indefinitely its national carrier “Nigeria Air” – which was due to take off in December this year.
“I regret to announce that the Federal Executive Council has taken the tough decision to suspend the National Carrier Project in the interim. All commitments due will be honoured,” aviation minister Hadi Sirika said on Wednesday while briefing newsmen. He said the federal government took the decision to suspend the procurement of Nigeria Air at the federal executive council meeting.
“We thank the public for the support as always.”
Sirika didn’t give any specific reasons for the suspension.
Bear in mind that in July, the federal government unveiled the name of Nigeria’s national carrier, as well as the logo at the Farnborough International Airshow in London.
Earlier this month, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) also disclosed that it would deliver the Air Transport Licence (ATL) and the Aircraft Operators Certificate (AOC) to the new national carrier before December.
Details later…
