Edo Teachers Embark On Indefinite Strike On Friday

Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike In Edo On Friday
Peeved by the failure of the Edo State Government to meet its demands, the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has disclosed that it will commence an indefinite strike on Friday.
The union had given the state government a 21-day ultimatum to meet its demand or face an industrial action.
However, in a statement made available to journalists in Benin on Tuesday and signed by the state Chairman, Pius Okhueleigbe, and acting Secretary, Mr Moni Modesty, the union alleged that the government had failed to meet the teachers’ demand for improved welfare.
“The union magnanimously gave another seven-day extension period to the government to meet our demand which ended 13th of September.
“And failure to meet the demand, Edo state public school teachers will commence an indefinite strike action with effect from Friday 14th,” the statement stated.
The teachers’ demands include the financial implementation of the 2013 to 2015 primary school teachers promotions as approved by the government with the arrears of last January to July inclusive as well as teachers deliberated omitted or denied  promotions by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB.
The state’s chairman of SUBEB, JoanOviawe, said the government was in discussion with the teachers to avert the planned strike.
