The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yobe State has said that 2,826 polling and voting units have been certified for the 2019 generation elections scheduled to hold on February, 16 and March 2, 2019.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Ahmad Makama disclosed this Yesterday when he hosted stakeholders’ forum to discuss issues relating to the elections.
“One of the cardinal objectives of INEC is to conduct credible, free, fair and transparent elections. Consequent upon this, the commission established stakeholders’ forum from various organisation to contribute their quota.
“Another issue is hate speech which generates tension within the society and counter peaceful atmosphere of the polity,” he said.
Makama drew the attention of the stakeholders on the vices that truncate the democratic processes like vote buying and selling.
He further gave good news to the forum that, “In the 2019 general elections, the accreditation and voting were merged to take place simultaneously, however, reiterated that the use of Smart Card Reader (SCR) which was introduced in the 2015 general elections and other subsequent bye-elections will be used.”
The stakeholders meeting was attended by heads of security agencies, media executives, politicians, religious leaders, civil society organisations (CSOs) as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operating in the state among others.
