Like plants, careers are meant to be nurtured. If you want to it flourish and take you to the top of the ladder, you’ve got to really work for it.
If your career is looking stagnant and no sign of improvement in what you do, it might be time for you to do some self-assessments to know what the problem is and take steps to fix it.
However, if you can’t really tell when your career is veering towards a dead end, here are some common signs that indicate that your career is stalling.
1. No change in your responsibilitiesIf your responsibilities in the last few years have not changed and no possibilities of it changing anytime soon, you might need to have a conversation with your superiors, may be your boss. Just have a conversation.
2. No change in your job title and salaryYou have moved from one company to another yet there is no remarkable difference in your salary and job title. If your job mobility does not translate to new work experience and salary increase, the movement is just a change in work environment.
3. Not learning new skillsIf you can’t remember the last time you learn new skills in your industry, your career will not only suffer, your lack of skills will also render you irrelevant in the industry.
4. People hired after you have been promotedAnother sign of a stagnant career reflects in how long it takes you to be promoted. If people that were hired after you got promoted long before you’re considered for it, then you need to start working on yourself.
5. You have fewer job dutiesEveryone in an organization has their job duties, but some people tend to have more responsibilities because of their skill, competence and relevance in the organization. If your job duties doesn’t go beyond the basic ones, it means you’re not growing on the job.
6. Not getting invited to important discussionsIf your boss or superiors are not inviting you to important meetings about projects, campaigns or other extra activities that may or may not have to do with your work, you should be worried about your career growth.
7. No one asks for your help or advicePeople ask for help and advice from people they believe have answers or solutions to their problems. If your colleagues do not consider you knowledgeable or skilled enough to give answers to the questions they want to ask about your industry, they will surely ignore you to talk to others who they believe can help them out.
