Steps On How To Calculate Your University, College and School GPA and CGPA

It is quite funny that a lot of students even in their final year do not know how to calculate their grade point average. Well, the importance of knowing your grade point average in the higher institution of learning cannot be overemphasised as this serves as a check to examine whether you’re making progress or not


1. First of all You need to know the number of hours allocated to each course or a unit allocated to each course. For example if you have a 3 hour lecture then it is a 3 credit unit course while 2 hour lecture is a 2 credit unit course, so don’t be confused, This is called credit hour or credit unit.


2. Every A is a 5 point, B is a 4 point, C is a 3 point, D is a 2 point, E is 1 point, F is zero.


3. Multiply each grade point by the number of credit units or hour and sum it.


4. Add all the credit units together


5. Divide the total of your grade point by the total credit unit. For example if your total grade is 635 and your total credit unit is 19 then divide 635 by 19. Then what ever it gives you is your GPA


Then For CGPA


6. Add the total of your grades above for all the semesters you have the results.


7. Add the total credit units for all the semesters you have the results.


8. Divide the total of your grade for all the semester by the total credit unit for all the semester also, then what ever it gives you is your CGPA


Note: If your CGPA falls within the range of 4.5 – 5.0, it’s a first class.


If your CGPA falls within the range of 3.5 – 4.49, it’s a second class upper division.


If your CGPA falls within the range of 2.5 –3.49 , it’s a second class lower division.


If your CGPA falls within 1.0 – 2.49, it’s a third class.


And your CGPA falls from 0.99 and below it’s a pass degree.
