A middle-aged man has pleaded guilty to a charge of an attempt to defile a five-year-old girl.
The man, Umaru Bello of Wurro-Chekke in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State, who responded to a one-count charge read to him at the Upper Area Court 3, Yola, on Wednesday, said it was true that he attempted to rape the minor.
He said he took her to the bush with the intention of having carnal knowledge of her but that he changed his mind and did not go ahead with it.
He pleaded for leniency over the attempted defilement.
A first Information Report (FIR) read to the court indicated that the offence took place last month, April 14.
The charge against the man of an “attempt to commit an offence to rape,” is being prosecuted by the Nigeria Police against the suspect.
The suspect was returned to prison custody after Wednesday’s sitting of the court, just as the presiding Judge, Hon Umaru Isah, adjourned commencement of hearing on the case to May 15, 2019.
