Don Ubani, Deputy Chief of Staff in the office of the Deputy Governor of Abia State and former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, has written to Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This follows the election of Ayu and others as new national officers of the PDP in a well-attended national convention of the party held at Eagles Square, in Abuja, the nation’s capital, on October 30th and 31st, 2021.
In a letter dated November 1st, 2021, addressed to Senator Iyorchia Ayu, and made available to journalists in Umuahia, the Abia capital, on Tuesday, Ubani, who was one of the 22 conveners of the PDP in Abia State in 1998, congratulated Ayu, on his well-deserved emergence as a consensus national chairman-elect of the party, and as well as other members of the National Working Committee.
He also commended the outgoing members of the NWC for their steadfastness in sustaining and improving the administrative and electoral fortunes and capacity of the party in the face of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ubani, who regretted the challenges that led to the loss of the former ruling party during the 2015 presidential election, reminded Senator Ayu that the challenge before him is enormous, as the citizens of the country are now yearning for true and people-oriented leadership, due to the failure of the governing APC to find an end to the myriads of problems threatening her unity and development.
The Abia foundation member of the PDP, further told the new chairman that finding solutions to Nigeria’s problems requires a thorough appraisal of the issues troubling Nigeria, determination to address them, devotion, application of the principle of equity, fairness and justice, inclusiveness, altruism, patriotism, honesty and transparency.
Ubani stated partly in the letter, “Our acceptance speech at the Eagles Square, in Abuja, shortly after your election as National Chairman in the early hours of Sunday 31st October 2021, was, no doubt, a clear indication that you have a roadmap for the accomplishment of the objective of your emergence. As long as Nigerian politics is concerned, there is no doubt that you know your onions.
“Except you would allow errors of omission or commission to weigh you down, the Nigerian Stage is already agog for your triumph. Your emergence could be likened to the courageous entry of the Peoples Democratic Party in 1998 into the Nigerian Political Theatre that had been ravaged and debilitated by dictatorial insensitivities of the Nigerian Military that had unlawfully held the Nigerian Peoples under siege.
“Human memory is known to be short. Our past is often easily lost in our memory. Otherwise, Nigerians should not be in a hurry to appear to have forgotten that it took extraordinary courage and astuteness of founding Members of the Peoples Democratic Party, led by the first Civilian Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, to take the risk of coming together to rescue the Nigerian Peoples from the clutches of unconstitutionality and brazen Military dictatorship.
“Your emergence as National Chairman of PDP at this crucial moment in the history of Nigeria has naturally conferred on you the onerous task of rescuing Nigeria from a clueless and heartlessly insensitive administration porously hoisted on the country by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
“As a former President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, you know more than many of us that Nigeria had never been so divided and polarized as it is today, before. The various agitations for self-determination in the South-East, South-South, South-West and even Middle-Belt are purely a result of a policy of open discrimination, segregation and injustice deliberately and primitively orchestrated by the APC Government of deceit.
“No doubt, you also know where our Party got it wrong in the past that made the Nigerian electorate to become vulnerable to the false and utopian promises of APC in 2015.
“My humble piece of advice is that your focus should be holistically on your rescue mission, driven by democratic principles and guidelines. It is clear that APC, willy nilly, has dug its own grave in the pursuit of sentimentalities of narrow-mindedness and ethnic irredentism. In the course of your leadership of this Great Party of ours, I would always crave your indulgence to allow the consciousness of equity, fairness, Justice, competence, patriotism, honesty and transparency to be your guiding ethos.
“By God’s grace, being assiduous, visionary, proactive, and applying the principle of inclusiveness and collective responsibility would make you repeat what your late elder kinsman and Statesman, Chief Solomon Lar did for Nigeria in 1998/99 as National Chairman of PDP. The ball is in your court and, by God’s grace, there must be light at the end of the tunnel”.
