His publicist announced on Friday afternoon (September 8) Don had died following a short illness, with funeral arrangements pending.
The US country singer and songwriter was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2010, and sang such country hits as You’re My Best Friend, Love Me Over Again and I’m Just A Country Boy.
Don married his sweetheart Joy Bucher in 1960, who went onto have two sons Gary and Timmy.
Known as the ‘Gentle Giant’ of country music from his soft voice, he later formed folk trio The Pozo Seco Singers with Lofton Cline and Susan Taylor in 1964.
In 2016, hip surgery forced Williams to cancel planned tour dates and he announced his retirement a month later.
In a statement from the time, Don said: ‘It’s time to hang my hat up and enjoy some quiet time at home. I’m so thankful for my fans, my friends and my family for their everlasting love and support.’
His hits have also been covered by a variety of artists, including Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash, Josh Turner and Kenny Rogers
